## Ownership & M&AMessi Adds CD Eldense to a Growing Football Ownership Portfolio

Lionel Messi is becoming a football-club owner in his own right. CD Eldense has announced that the Inter Miami forward has acquired the club, subject to approval from Spain's Consejo Superior de Deportes.

The transaction gives Messi control of a professional Spanish club only months after his acquisition of fifth-tier UE Cornellà. That makes the Eldense deal more interesting than a standalone celebrity investment: Messi now owns football assets at two different levels of the Spanish pyramid.

## The deal gives Messi control of a professional club

[CD Eldense officially confirmed the acquisition ](https://www.cdeldense.es/noticias/leo-messi-nuevo-propietario-del-cd-eldense?ref=footballbusinessnews.com)on October 1\. The club described Messi's arrival as the start of a long-term project aimed at developing Eldense on sporting, institutional and social levels.

The purchase price has not been disclosed. According to [Reuters ](https://www.reuters.com/sports/soccer/messi-becomes-majority-owner-spanish-club-eldense-2026-10-01/?ref=footballbusinessnews.com), Messi acquired the shares held by the Colombian investment group that previously controlled the club.

**Second club** Messi acquired UE Cornellà earlier in 2026\.

**Professional asset** Eldense competes in Spain's second tier, LaLiga Hypermotion.

**Approval pending** Completion remains subject to authorization from Spain's CSD.

## Two clubs create a different investment thesis

Messi's [acquisition of UE Cornellà in April ](https://www.reuters.com/sports/soccer/messi-acquires-spanish-fifth-tier-club-ue-cornella-2026-04-16/?ref=footballbusinessnews.com)was positioned around youth development and the Catalan club's long-established academy.

Eldense is a different asset. It operates in professional football, where broadcast distributions, commercial partnerships, transfer income and league status have a much larger effect on enterprise value.

No formal multi-club network has been announced. There is also no public indication that Cornellà and Eldense will share recruitment, players or commercial operations.

But owning clubs at different levels of the same national football system creates obvious strategic possibilities. Scouting, academy development, player pathways, recruitment infrastructure and commercial relationships are all areas where ownership platforms can eventually create economies of scale.

**The business shift**

Messi's football income has historically depended on wages, endorsements and licensing. Club ownership gives him exposure to enterprise value, player assets, commercial revenue and long-term appreciation of the underlying football business.

## Eldense comes with professional-football economics

Eldense was founded in 1921 and is based in Elda, Alicante. Reuters reported that the club sits near the bottom of the Segunda División after a difficult opening to the season, making sporting performance an immediate financial consideration for the new ownership.

Promotion and relegation materially change a club's economics. Broadcasting income, sponsorship value, attendance, player valuations and wage capacity can all move with league status.

That means the investment case is not simply about injecting more capital. The club must allocate that capital efficiently while operating within Spanish football's financial controls.

## The stadium puts the scale of the asset into perspective

Eldense plays at the municipally owned [Nuevo Pepico Amat ](https://www.cdeldense.es/estadio-nuevo-pepico-amat?ref=footballbusinessnews.com). The club lists capacity at 5,776 spectators plus accessible seating, underlining how different this investment is from buying one of Europe's major clubs.

The smaller scale can also be part of the opportunity. Revenue starts from a lower base, meaning improvements in league position, sponsorship, player trading and commercial operations can have a proportionately greater effect on the business.

## Messi is moving from talent to capital

The important story is not that a famous footballer has bought a club. Former players have invested in teams before.

The more interesting development is that Messi is building a portfolio while he is still an active player. He now has ownership interests across clubs with different sporting and commercial profiles, while Reuters has also reported that he is due to receive an ownership stake in Inter Miami after his playing contract ends.

That gives Messi the foundations of a post-playing business model closely tied to the industry in which his brand carries exceptional global value.

Eldense will ultimately be judged like any other football investment: by capital allocation, sporting performance, revenue growth and whether the asset becomes more valuable under its new owner.

The unanswered question is whether Messi is buying individual clubs or beginning to assemble something larger.
