## Sporting CP Lines Up €150m Bond Mandate as Football Finance Moves Deeper Into Capital Markets

[Finance](https://www.footballbusinessnews.com/tag/finance/) [Europe](https://www.footballbusinessnews.com/tag/europe/) October 3, 2026

Sporting Clube de Portugal's football company is asking shareholders for authority to issue up to €150 million of bonds over the next five years, giving the Lisbon club substantially greater flexibility over refinancing, debt maturities and future capital requirements.

The proposal will be put to shareholders of Sporting Clube de Portugal – Futebol, SAD at an October 26 general meeting at Estádio José Alvalade. Under the resolution, the board would be permitted to issue one or more bond loans with an aggregate nominal value of up to €150 million.

Crucially, this is not an announcement that Sporting is immediately borrowing €150 million. The proposal instead creates a financing mandate that the board could use in stages until October 2031\. [The shareholder proposal reported by A Bola](https://www.abola.pt/noticias/sporting-contas-leoninas-votadas-em-ag-da-sad-no-dia-26-2026100121155216093?ref=footballbusinessnews.com)allows individual bond issues to carry maturities of up to ten years.

Maximum authority **€150m** Aggregate potential bond issuance

Mandate period **5 years** Running to October 2031

Maximum maturity **10 years** For individual issues

2025/26 profit **€34.7m** Fifth consecutive profitable year

### Sporting wants financing flexibility, not simply more debt

The structure matters.

Sporting's board would be allowed to determine the size, interest rate, subscription price, repayment date and other terms of each individual transaction depending on the club's funding requirements and prevailing market conditions.

The authorization also permits both new public subscriptions and exchange offers involving existing Sporting debt. That means future bond transactions could be used not only to raise fresh capital but also to refinance obligations before maturity.

**What the €150m number actually means**

It is a ceiling on the aggregate nominal amount of bond issuance the board may approve under the mandate. Sporting does not automatically add €150 million of debt to its balance sheet if shareholders approve the resolution.

### Two existing Sporting bond issues are already in the refinancing window

Sporting is not new to Portugal's retail bond market.

The club currently has a €50 million **Sporting SAD 2024–2027** bond and a €40 million **Sporting SAD 2024–2028** issue outstanding. [Euronext Securities records](https://www.euronext.com/en/csd/porto/documentation/securities-under-custody?ref=footballbusinessnews.com)show both securities in the Portuguese central securities system.

The 2024–2027 transaction was originally marketed at €30 million before being increased to €50 million following investor demand. Sporting said demand reached approximately €66.4 million, equivalent to 1.33 times the final offer size.

[Sporting described that €50 million placement as a record operation](https://www.sporting.pt/pt/noticias/clube/noticias/2024-03-25/sad-encaixa-50-milhoes-com-operacao-recorde?ref=footballbusinessnews.com), attracting more than 4,200 investors.

Later that year, Sporting completed another bond transaction worth €40 million. That issue matures in November 2028 and carries a fixed annual coupon of 5.25%.

The new authorization specifically allows the club to structure exchange offers involving those existing securities. In practice, that gives management the ability to approach upcoming maturities proactively instead of waiting until redemption dates are close.

### The balance sheet supporting the strategy is significantly stronger

Sporting enters this refinancing cycle from a very different financial position to the one it occupied several years ago.

According to the club's [2025/26 annual financial reporting](https://www.sporting.pt/en/node/31266?ref=footballbusinessnews.com), Sporting SAD generated a €34.7 million net profit during the latest financial year.

That represented a 74% increase from the previous season and extended the company's run to five consecutive profitable financial years.

Operating revenue excluding player transactions reached a record €187.7 million, up 27%, while total turnover reached approximately €300 million. UEFA Champions League participation alone generated €80.3 million during the period.

### Sporting is building multiple layers of long-term financing

The proposed €150 million bond mandate also sits alongside a much larger institutional financing transaction already completed elsewhere within Sporting's structure.

In 2025, subsidiary Sporting Entertainment raised €225 million through senior secured notes. [Sporting said the financing received investment-grade ratings from Fitch and DBRS](https://www.sporting.pt/pt/noticias/clube/noticias/2026-02-28/sporting-sad-duplica-resultado-liquido-para-32-milhoes-de-euros-0?ref=footballbusinessnews.com)and was designed to help fund the club's broader Future is Coming 24–34 strategy.

Euronext records the Sporting Entertainment notes as a €225 million security with a 2053 maturity.

That longer-dated financing and the proposed SAD bond mandate perform different functions, but together they demonstrate how Sporting is increasingly using capital-market instruments rather than relying on a single source of bank funding or short-duration borrowing.

### Why exchange offers could become important

The most interesting part of the shareholder proposal may be the ability to conduct exchange offers.

A football club approaching a large bond maturity has several choices: repay investors using existing cash, refinance the entire obligation with new borrowing, or invite existing bondholders to exchange their securities for a new issue with a later maturity.

The third option can extend the maturity profile without forcing the club to refinance an entire issue in cash on a single date.

Sporting used this mechanism in previous bond offerings, combining subscriptions from new investors with exchanges from holders of earlier debt.

01 **Existing bond approaches maturity**

02 **New security is offered**

03 **Investors may exchange existing notes**

04 **Debt maturity is extended**

### European football clubs are becoming more sophisticated borrowers

Sporting's proposal is another example of the growing sophistication of football financing.

Major clubs increasingly operate with financing structures that resemble those of conventional corporates: revolving facilities, secured notes, private placements, securitisations, public bonds and refinancing programmes can all sit alongside traditional bank debt.

For Sporting, the attraction of a multi-year authorization is optionality. Instead of seeking a fresh shareholder resolution every time market conditions become attractive, management would already have the authority required to access investors.

That could allow the club to refinance existing debt earlier, extend maturities or raise additional capital when pricing is favourable.

### The next date to watch is October 26

Shareholders will vote on the authorization at the general meeting later this month alongside Sporting's 2025/26 accounts and elections to the SAD's corporate bodies.

Approval would not tell investors when the next Sporting bond is coming or how large it will be. It would, however, establish the framework through which as much as €150 million of bond financing could be executed during the next five years.

For a football business generating record operating revenue while simultaneously investing heavily in sporting and commercial infrastructure, that financing flexibility could become an increasingly important part of the club's capital strategy.
